Talk about going all out with your electronics projects- this person built a life-size giraffe!!! They used the MakingThings controller kit to build this. If you don't know the guys over at MakingThings you should definitely check them out. They make an assortment of kits which allow you to interface your art and electronics; essentially, new media legos!

Project: Beating LED Heart

I just started working with 555 timers and decade counters (4017), and I wanted to make a fun first project. So, I decided to make a little heart out of LEDs with 2 layers: 1) the outline of the heart 2) the inside of the heart. Inside the circuit there is a 2-step sequencer that alternates the light between the two layers (the "beating"). The speed of the beating is variable. Here are a few pics a and short video:

Project Idea: Color Organ LED Portrait

start with an image (portrait)
-posterize it.
-simplify each posterization stage into a series of dotted lines (these will eventually become LEDs)
- make the main outline of the face and main features in one color
-mark each added layer of detail (posterization layer) in different colors
-each part/layer of the image will be a different color and will respond to a different input frequency

amplitude meter controls voltage to color organ lights. The more full frequency the more detail of the image you see. the louder the brighter the image is.
